Eating Alone…

IMG_20130830_162809_466

Okay, this whole single life thing isn’t that bad…  But there are a number of things to get used to. One of the big adjustments? The whole eating alone ordeal! Lol

Shopping for one person is a whole new experience for me. Yikes! I go to the supermarket and want to throw all this cool stuff in my trolley and then realise… Who’s going to eat it? Lol

I eat a high protein low carb diet. But days like today, my body craved the carbs and so I made a bowl of penne and just threw olive oil and salt on it. I know that sounds terribly bland but I kind of listen to what my body wants, and that’s what it asked for!

So, to avoid the whole over-spending on items I’m not going to eat, I have decided to do the majority of my shopping at the food markets. This way I’m only buying healthy food and not tempted by all the rubbish foods in the big supermarkets.

BTW: I love rubbish food but my hips don’t seem to agree! 🙂

Being 45 it’s not like when I was younger and can just throw whatever junk food down my mouth and still be thin. I actually have to work at staying slim. So not fair, this aging thing! 🙂

I still believe we can eat everything, as long as it’s in moderation.

Problem is, if you open up a bag of chips? Who’s going to stop at just a few?  Not I said the lady in the back row! Lol Or was it me who is typing this? Okay, it’s me! 🙂

The other bonus about not doing all the shopping in the big supermarkets is I will save a heap of money. You see I’m the person they pay millions of dollars to get into the psyches of our brains and make us think we need that sticky tape at the end of the checkout… Ohhhh and lets not forget the blu tack, egg rings, tongs, and any other junk thing they cleverly place within my line of vision!

I’m onto you Marketing companies. You’re attacking this Bipolar woman who  thinks she needs to buy everything! Or  just maybe it’s my weakened mind. Lol

One last thing. I’ve always like eating at the dining room table. Well, my table seats 8 people and when just 1 person sits there? You feel like a loner! Lol

Sakura sits in the chair opposite me and just waits till I’m finished and then she hops down. Actually the music keeps me company! Lol  So, I thought I might start eating in front of the T.V. It feels better, yet wrong at the same time!

The table can be just be used when I have guests for dinner. 🙂

So, any shopping tips or quick healthy recipes anyone wants to share? Remember cooking for 1. And in no shape or form am I a gourmet cook!
I’m an apprentice! LMAO

Love and hugs to you all. Paula xxx

  1. eating period whilst single is often something that becomes an unwanted chore. Many resort to takeout or just mustard sandwiches. blech. lol.

so, something that works well, pick a day, once a week or once every two weeks, as a cooking day, it only actually takes an hour or so, but you cook proteins or casseroles, and divide them into single portions. Then when you want to eat, you have a large choice of easy to warm proteins, or ready to eat casseroles. It makes eating more interesting, easier and healthier.

Eating in front of the TV, YES. lol, but it is good, you then have someone to talk to and listen too, so meals do not become an unwanted thing, but something that can cheer you up.

pssst… they have tiny bags of chips, then you can eat all of it without guilt 🙂

When I was single I did exactly what sakuraandme is suggesting you do. Sunday afternoon was cooking day and then all of it when into the fridge or freezer. “They” say you shouldn’t eat in front of the tv because your mind starts telling you that you should eat every time you watch. They may be right, however, there is no way I could eat at a large empty dining table. It was always in front of the television for md.

    • Hi Bradley!
      🙂
I should have set Sunday aside to make meals and freeze them, but my freezer isn’t that big and I filled it with meat etc. Lol 🙂
Clearly I wasn’t thinking as a single person. Now I’m onto it and I think your idea is pretty cool. Have a great weekend. Hugs to you. Paula xxx

  3. Hey big sis 🙂
I just love your interior in the dinning area 😉
And It don’t seems like you are enjoying being single… It is like you are forcing happiness for being single… Please find someone who could take care of you and let Him worry about your food 🙂
I use to eat junk food the say way 😉 I know it would be a real mess when I would be a little older but I can’t stop eating 😛 Still I am smart 😛 I don’t even know where all the junk food I eat goes 😀
Love you and keep eating 😉 Stay healthy ….Hugs ! xx

    • Thanks for liking my dining room. 🙂
      🙂
Sometimes I like being single but I suppose it’s an adjustment. That man you said that should cook for me? Where is he?? You’re still beautiful and young ,Little Sister. 🙂 You can eat everything! 🙂 I hope my little sister is having a great weekend. Hugs from OZ. Paula xxxxxx

Thank you, little sister. Love you to the moon and back. I’m in a cab on my way to meet some friends. I’ll have a dance for you! Hugs xxxx

  4. i agree with paula as well, and perhaps eat in a smaller space? enjoy the freedom of eating whatever and whenever you want, many would kill for tht opportunity )

    • Hahahaha!
      🙂
Hey Beth, that is so true. When my boys were younger I used to dream of this day! LMAO Then it came along and it wasn’t what I had expected. Lol
That table is definitely too big just for me…T.V it is. 🙂
I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. hugs to you, beth. Paula xxxx

  5. Paula, when I have to eat alone I tend to eat standing in the kitchen listening to the radio. I don’t blame you for not wanting to eat at the large table (although you could scatter books, magazines etc. to read while you eat?). I often read the paper when I eat lunch by myself… I’m glad to hear that you are taking care of yourself, dear friend. 🙂

    Blessings ~ Wendy xo

    • Hi wendy-Lee! 🙂
That’s a really cool idea and I love all those gossip magazines. Lol
I’ve even done that…stood in the kitchen and daydreamed out the window as I was eating. 🙂 I’m probably not eating as much as I should, but what I eat is healthy. Love to you and your family. Hugs Paula xxxxx

  6. Do you have a kitchen nook with small table? Use that. If not, serve Sakura’s meal the time you are eating. Then you have company.
I eat on my dinning table, table for two. As for cooking, I only shop on the day that I will cook the food and eat it. No frozen food. All fresh. It may sound a lot of work but in the end, I save money. No tv dinners. Chips are good once in a while.

    • Hello Perpetua! 🙂
No, I only have the big table in the picture above. Actually I’m thinking that’s a good idea as well to only go and buy food on the day I want to cook it. Good thinking, 99!! 🙂
I’ve always fed Sakura in the mornings. But what a great idea this would be as well! She’s great company. At my table I sit at the head of it and she sits to my left. It’s so cute! Love and hugs to you. Paula xxxx

  7. alone? Hmm I nibble – little plates of cut up tomatoes and cheese and olives and shallots and fat free crackers and ..ok I shall stop, but now summer is approaching the perfect time to do this? You still get full and it’s healthy (ok so not the cheese) give me a break we have to bend the rules at times 😉 xx

    • Hahahaha!
      Yes, we do! 🙂
I suppose in ways I’m more of a grazer with my food also. I love pasta more than anything, but it puts weight on too quickly for me. Again that whole age thingy! LMAO Love and many hugs to you, Mumsy! Have a great weekend. Hugs Paula xxxxx

  8. nice dining room but empty too 😦 best wishes, big sis. Maybe I’ll join ya there someday who knows.

  9. You can cook for two and save the rest for the next day dinner or for lunch.

    • Hey Ivonne!
I realise this one is the general consensus. When I moved I filled my freezer with meat etc. Now I’ll have to eat my way through it and then prepare these meals and freeze them. I hope Selena and Maddy are okay? Have a great weekend, Ivonne. Hugs to you. Paula xxxxx

  10. I love eating in front of the TV!! The only problem is that you sometimes don’t realize the quantity (or in my case the quality).
One easy and relatively healthy recipe is to take some chicken, dip it in mustard and then some crashed cornflakes and ground Parmesan cheese and bake it in the oven for about 30-40 minutes, depending on the size.

  11. I know what you mean, it is weird buying for one, all the portions seem different, I once bough a pie that served four and had to eat it over two meals just to know waste it…that wasn’t a fun day.

I try and avoid all the nice tasting junk food too, but sometimes it needs to be scoffed. I don’t eat much…as many people have commented recently but when i do eat…I eat like a pig. We’d be great on reality TV for eating habits lol.

    • Hahaha! I think we would. 🙂
🙂 I get like that, some days I feel like I can sit in the fridge and eat everything…next day nothing at all! I’m a drinker and I suppose that doesn’t help. Actually I binge everything in life. Tonight I ate chicken and half a packet of chicken and soy potato chips! Yikes…me bad! Lol
Nite from me to you. Hugs Paula xx

Your right eating in front of T.V is kind of fun. 🙂
Better than sitting at a table alone. 🙂
Thanks for your comment. Have a great day. Hugs to you. Paula xxx

  13. Add some salmon and peas to that penne and bit of lemon juice. YUM! Eat in front of the tv – who cares x

    • Hey that sounds great! 🙂
I love peas and salmon! 🙂
That ones a win win for me. 🙂
It felt odd not eating at the table…not now. 🙂
Huge hug and thanks! Enjoy your day. Hugs Paula xxx

  14. You know my friend m Your happiness makes me happy too! With love maxima

    • Thank you, Stefan. 🙂
Your comments always make me smile and your poetry makes me fall in love. 🙂

  15. June

Eating alone is indeed a challenge. I’m used to eating out alone instead of cooking. Cooking takes a lot out of my time and yet I also worry about who’s going to eat it all up. That’s why I moved back to my parents’ place since I’m single. 🙂 But still I still enjoy eating alone even on a long table. It makes me more mindful of what I’m chewing.
Hello Paula. Nice to be back. Virtual hugs!

    • I never thought about being mindful of what I’m eating. 🙂
In fact when I eat at the table alone…I eat much slower! So maybe I am more mindful and don’t realise it. Food for thought, June baby! 🙂 No punt intended. Lol 🙂
Glad your back. Huge hug, Paula xxxx
